Logan Hardware
Gina Schaefer is founder and CEO of a chain of Ace Hardware stores located in Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD, and Alexandria, VA. She is a passionate entrepreneur who grew her company from one to thirteen stores that employ more than 250 people. As a former member of the Ace Hardware Corporation Board of Directors, she is dedicated to maintain a strong corporate culture and is currently selling the business to her team through an employee stock ownership program (ESOP).
Schaefer draws her inspiration from fellow entrepreneurs who strive to be creative, think differently, and help make a difference. People like Judy Wicks, founder of the White Dog Cafe in Philadelphia. from whom Schaefer learned innovative business strategies; Paul Saginaw and Air Weinzweig, founders of gourmet food group Zingerman’s Community of Businesses in Michigan, who inpired her to use her voice as a force for good; and Father Gregory Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles.
Gina’s memoir, Recovery Hardware, was published in September and chronicles her journey from start-up retain business owner to a leader who learns from everyone on her team.
What was the neighborhood like when you opened 20 years ago?
There were very few of us here 20 years ago. Each block was marked by empty lots, boarded up buildings, and dark storefronts. We are proud to share our 20th anniversary year with Rice as well.
Favorite locally-owned small business?
Rice has been a favorite of mine for two decades, so I was excited when they launched Rice Market downstairs. They have the prettiest containers, utensils, and packaging. I can’t visit without leaving with a bag full of presents for myself.
Favorite place to grab a drink?
I don’t drink alcohol, so our coffee shops are my favorite. Aslin’s dirty chai is high on my list, and their outdoor seating is the best of a pretty day.
