Thomson School Public Art

Are you familiar with the Strong John Thomson Elementary School?  Many people are not aware that the simple red brick structure at the corner of 12th and L Streets NW is a Baccalaureate institution and a dynamic part of our community.  When school leaders expressed their desire to increase the school’s visibility to the public and to make its exterior more welcoming to students, LCCA sprang into action with funding from the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities for the first phase of the project.  LCCA engaged Lee and Associates (LAI), a local landscape architecture firm to create a landscape concept plan that incorporates public art.  LAI, which donated a portion of their services, worked with a team form Thomson School, LCCA and art organization Radical Empathy on themes and locations for the art works.

Sculptor Chris Soteri Tousimis created a stainless steel art piece to celebrate themes of nature and growth – both of significance to the school’s curriculum. https://www.christousimis.com

Muralist Kelly Towles animated the entry walkway with a piece that tells a story of the school’s tiger mascot exploring the world, reflecting Thomson’s international student body.  https:www.kellytowles.com

Future phases of work, depending on funding, will include landscaping that can be integrated into Thomson’s environmental curriculum, additional works of art and a new sign for the school.
