Mayor and Council Declare Logan Circle Day

05/16/2004

The Office of Mayor Anthony A. Williams and the Council of the District of Columbia are set to pass a resolution declaring Sunday, May 22, 2005 as Logan Circle Day. The resolution will honor the work of the Logan Circle Community Association’s on-going efforts to make the Major General John A. Logan Memorial Park a safe, clean, and enjoyable location for the community. The resolution also honors the renovation of the park performed by the National Park Service.

A carnival style reception will be held in the park starting at 2:00 PM on Logan Circle Day. A formal ribbon cutting ceremony begins at 2:30 PM, with Councilmember Jack Evans delivering the keynote address. Evans played an essential role in mediating requests from the community to Park officials and stated: “Throughout this project, patience and understanding from both the residents and the Park Service was needed and I am pleased to see the issues of concern have been resolved. I look forward to seeing everyone at this momentous occasion.”

Also scheduled for the program: Vikki Keys, Superintendent of the National Park Service; Sgt. Brett Parson of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit; Lt. Mike Smith, head of MPD’s Police Service Area 307; and Lt. Philip Beck of the United States Park Police. Vicar Robin Simpson, from Luther Place Memorial Church will deliver the invocation. Area musicians will be performing prior to the ceremony, with refreshments provided by local businesses.

“This is a wonderful day for the Logan Circle community,” said Frank Mobilio, president of the LCCA. “With the support of our residents, local businesses, city leaders, police, and congregations, we are able to celebrate and rededicate the center and focal point of our neighborhood.”

The celebration of Logan Circle Park is appropriately timed in May, as the park’s namesake founded Memorial Day, passed by Congress in 1868. General Logan served the state of Illinois in both the House and Senate.

Logan Circle Park is located at the intersections of Rhode Island Avenue, Vermont Avenue, P Street, and 13th Street NW.

“The rededication of Logan Circle Park is just the starting point,” indicated Jennifer E. Trock, chair of LCCA’s Park Committee. “Residents and business owners have come together to encourage positive growth in our community. As we move forward with change and developments in our neighborhood, we recognize that the majority of citizens cherish the park, and we intend to keep it as a neighborhood treasure.”
